Physical Activity Provides Important Health Benefits

     The US General Surgeon states that “Regular physical activity can help people with chronic, disabling conditions improve their stamina and muscle strength and can improve psychological well-being and quality of life by increasing the ability to perform activities of daily life.”  It's best to talk with your health care provider before you begin a physical activity routine.   A medical professional can tell you more about the amounts and types of physical activity that are appropriate for you based on your abilities. 

The Benefits of Physical Activity

Regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do for your health and offer some of the following benefits:
     •  Losing weight or maintaining a healthy weight
     •  Reduce risk of cardiovascular disease
     •  Reduce risk for type 2 diabetes
     •  Reduce risk of some cancers
     •  Strengthen bones and muscles providing more independence 
     •  Improve mental health and mood
     •  Improve ability to do daily activities 
•  Increase your chances of living longer

Physical Activity Recommendations:
Adults need at least:                                  OR

30 minutes of moderate-intensity
activity at least 5 times every week and muscle-strengthening activities 
on 2 or more
days a week that work all major muscle groups

20 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity on 3 more days of every week and muscle-strengthening activities on 2 or more days a week that work all major muscle groups
